ABOUT ME
For years, Southern California’s Van Nuys Boulevard was the hotbed of cruising and a gathering place for local street racers. One of the centers for San Fernando Valley hot rodding activity since the 50’s was the Bob’s Big Boy drive-in (pictured) and as carloads of teenagers departed, the six-mile, eight lane boulevard was wide open for cruising among the big Valley new car lots.
Through the sixties and into the seventies, up the street at the Hughes Market parking lot, "Big Willie" Robinson and the Brotherhood of Street Racers and were taking bets with $20, $50 & $100 dollar bills for the evening’s street racing fun on the quieter, yet to be developed streets of the North Valley. Yes, street racing became a big part of the Van Nuys cruising scene and soon fell under the watchful eyes of the Los Angeles Police Department and eventually the helicopter pilots of the LAPD.
There were vehicles of every description and horsepower range eventually clogging business access with bumper-to-bumper gridlock, burnouts, noise and those dreaded teenagers hanging out without a purpose. The LAPD and local merchants successfully closed out cruising on Van Nuys Boulevard by the mid-70’s as gas guzzling, big block muscle cars reverted to dinosaur status and street racing moved underground.
Today the land on which Bob’s Big Boy sat is another new car dealership and many of those teenagers who have landed in the middle-age category can now afford their high school dream car. With only local car shows and a few burger stand cruise nights left to show off your ride, the Van Nuys Cruising Association has announced that after a twenty-five year absence, cruising will return to Van Nuys Boulevard on the second Wednesday of the month.
The second VNCA event, centered around Rydell Pontiac/GMC on Van Nuys Boulevard has already hit its stride as hundreds of hot rods from 55-56-57 Chevys, Mustangs and ‘Cudas to V-dubs and a real Ford GT-40 rekindled that feeling of the period. Just getting together under a limited set of rules and strutting your hot rodding stuff looks like it’ll catch on with the help and encouragement of Rydell’s Director of Operations Chip Beck (pictured) and the new Van Nuys Cruising Association.
